@dr.gayetri: I’ve been a doctor for number years now, and one thing I’ve learnt is that the habits we repeat daily have a huge impact on how we age. Some of the biggest contributors I see to accelerated ageing are: 👉 Poor sleep quality → when sleep suffers, the brain can’t detox properly, hormones become disrupted and the body struggles to repair and recover. 👉 Blood sugar spikes → frequent spikes and crashes increase inflammation, impact energy and place stress on the body over time. 👉 Chronic stress → constantly living in fight-or-flight mode affects everything from hormones and gut health to brain function and inflammation. 👉 Ultra-processed foods → diets high in processed foods often increase inflammation while reducing the nutrients the body needs to function optimally. 👉 A sedentary lifestyle → sitting for long periods impacts metabolic health, circulation, muscle mass and even brain health. 👉 Low muscle mass → muscle is one of the biggest predictors of healthy ageing, resilience and metabolic health as we get older. 👉 Poor gut health → an imbalanced microbiome can influence inflammation, immunity, mood and cognitive function. 👉 Lack of recovery → constantly pushing without rest keeps the nervous system in survival mode and speeds up burnout. The good news is that ageing is influenced by far more than genetics alone. Small, consistent changes can have a powerful impact on your long-term health, energy and resilience. Dr Gayetri :
Some of the biggest things I personally focus on for healthy ageing and longevity: • Prioritising 7–9 hours of quality sleep and protecting a consistent bedtime as much as possible. • Strength training at least 2–4 times a week to support muscle mass, bone health and metabolic health. • Balancing blood sugar by building meals around protein, fibre and healthy fats, especially at breakfast. • Managing stress daily through breathwork, meditation, slowing down, and nervous system regulation. • Supporting gut health with fibre-rich whole foods, plenty of plant diversity and probiotic/prebiotic foods. • Reducing ultra-processed foods and increasing anti-inflammatory foods like oily fish, olive oil, berries and leafy greens. • Walking daily and avoiding long periods of sitting wherever possible. • Prioritising recovery by building moments of rest into the week, protecting downtime and not constantly functioning in “go mode”. • Spending time in daylight and nature to support circadian rhythm, mood and nervous system health. Longevity is built in the small habits we repeat consistently 💛
