When it’s two (or more) consonants after a vowel, the vowel sound short. When there’s only one consonant after the vowel, the vowel gets a longer sound. Although with words put together you have to apply the rule a bit different (they are still two words but written as one; in ”hurså” for example, the u gets a long sound even though there’s an s after the r because hur and så is two different words put in one) but you get the point

It’s because s is an unvoiced consonant. It’s smoother to pronounce if the consonants match, so the s transforms the preceeding g into the unvoiced version (k). In English it’s the other way, the first consonant changes the s that follows: Compare cats and dogs

Hate to tell you that Swedish isn't a language of rules, its a language of feelings. That's why even adults has issues when to use En or Ett correctly.
