@kimihajian: Vote in the comments 🫴🏽✨ Even when I’m teaching a dynamic vinyasa yoga class, I usually try to leave moments of complete silence throughout the practice. But this was the first time in a long time that I taught an entire yoga class without music. And honestly? Three years ago this would’ve completely stressed me out. I probably would’ve panicked and apologised the whole class 😅 But this time I genuinely took it as a sign. And what surprised me most was not just how much the students enjoyed it… but how much more present I felt as a yoga teacher too. At the end of class, I asked my regular students if they wanted me to bring the music back next week or continue experimenting with silent yoga classes. And surprisingly, more than half the room voted for silence. So even if you think music is important in yoga classes… maybe silence is too. 💫 I definitely don’t think there’s a strict right or wrong answer here and I’m absolutely not anti-music in yoga. Music can be an incredibly powerful tool when used intentionally in a yoga practice. A few personal things I try to keep in mind when I do use music in my classes: 🫴🏽 I try to choose music without lyrics 🫴🏽 If there are lyrics, they should feel intentional or support the class theme 🫴🏽 I personally avoid overly aggressive, sexual, or distracting lyrics during yoga 🫴🏽 The music should support the experience, not overpower it 🫴🏽 And I always try to leave space for moments of complete silence But again, every yoga teacher has their own style and relationship to music, and I’m definitely not dogmatic about this. I just think in modern yoga spaces we sometimes forget how powerful silence actually is. Curious what your thoughts are 👀

I only play wordless music. I found an amazing Indian music channel that really matches well with vinyasa. one of my students ask for it and the them of the class made them cry a few tears.

I love variety, because there’s always something valuable to be found. In the same way that sometimes I like yin, sometimes I like vinyasa, and sometimes I like ashtanga - sometimes I like music, and sometimes I like silence. I’ve been to delightful classes that are themed to one particular artist (went to a great Beatles themed class for example), and being among fellow fans added to the sense of community. And sometimes it feels really meaningful to just lock in to the sound of our breath in unison. It’s all groovy ✌🏻

you gotta meet people where they are. if it weren't for music, heat, arm balances, and inversions I never would have started yoga. as time goes by I take bits out... until I'm down to half primary and Mysore classes. perhaps one day I'll remove Asana completely, perhaps I'll start adding things back in. we all need different things at different times.

I like music especially for beginner yoga classes, I can see how no music could make more sense for intermediate or advanced yogis

In classes I prefer no music so I can focus on what teacher is saying. But when I do yoga at home I like to play some handpan music, it helps me get into the flow and mute any outside noises 🤗

I love both ! however when I first started, music helped me not feel self conscious as I learned to breathe and it helped guide my rhythm/depth etc. and sometimes I'll still let the music help ground my breath. the more I practiced yoga, the less I notice the music. and now i feel more comfortable breathing/practicing in silence

Completely agree! I teach outdoor yoga and have found that no (or limited) music during those classes helps create a sense of grounding and connection with nature. In indoor classes i typically use music but some intentional silence can be so powerful during asana.
