I really struggle with intellectualizing and I didn’t realize until recently that I’m so heavily relying on intellectualizing everything. So during EMDR, it’s really hard for me to not speak from that place because that’s how I survived and made sense of things as I got older. It feels like I don’t have the words or know how to even talk about things from a non-intellectual place. I just don’t know how to get in touch with how I’m actually feeling and how I actually felt in those moments rather than talking like I’m telling a story. Even when I really try, it’s like a brick wall, I just can’t access it 😩 Thanks for this video and sorry the bots are already here

@Babyspinach: Yes. Somehow along the way “talk therapy” got villainized with absolutely no nuance whatsoever. So frustrating!

oh wow. this is the first time I've ever had someone articulate the difference. I really appreciate that it makes much more sense now.

Had a moment just like this in therapy recently! We were reflecting and she asked me how I felt about my recent actions and I kept responding with some version of “I remember thinking that …” 🧐💭 and finally she was like: yes but what is the *EMOTION.* THE *FEELING.* And the question totally stumped me bc I was so emotionally disconnected from the experience! Talk about intellectualization 🥲

Experiential really requires trust, and preceding connection, but it’s what must really change anything emotionally deep. Cognitive is another form of masking.

This is so helpful! I’ve learned to intellectualize due to harsh criticism when I have emotionally expressed in the past with friends. But I’m also a verbal processor so it helps to do that too, I just didn’t realize the difference. I think I have a therapist I can trust enough to try 🥰

oh the disassociation part is spot on! I used to experience this in the beginning of my therapy journey that I'd feel so much but once I started talking about it the feelings dissipated ... my therapist at the time took it as me not being connected to my feelings and not allowing myself to feel which was definitely not the problem 😅😅 spot on, such simple phrase to describe it

as an AuDHD client with cPTSD, I loooove using metaphorical language to engage my cognitive and emotional brain whilst embodying these feelings through my voice and gestures
