@theunobsolete: They handed you a pen and hoped you wouldn’t ask questions. The 21 days, the personnel file, the pip outcome that was already decided. The exit interview that goes straight to HR. The fake severance deadline. None of this is an accident. It is a system built on you not knowing your rights until it is too late. Not legal advice. Educational information only. Always check with an employment attorney first. #theunobsolete #pip #documentationtips #severance #hrsecrets
I will never do an exit interview. I think that is the most ridiculous thing.

A PIP = 12 week medical leave! You’ll thank me later 😃

Hot take; pips should not exist. If you are put on one you have a bad manager who does not address and coach performance or other effectively.

I was given 45 days to sign, the agreement was 11 pages long, I hired an attorney.

I was taught in college that a PIP was a termination notice.

So basically if presented with a PIP they are already getting ready to fire me, correct ?

ok, I do hr and I don't see employees as enemies that I must hurt somehow. Why do most of these posts have this feel?? Employees follow the rules, I follow the rules, we try to work in unison to have a successful place of work. Having low turnover makes a company successful because you keep employees with experience and they form a bond with the rest of the staff creating an amazing work atmosphere for everyone including management and owners.. not all HR departments are the same 🌸

HR pro. Please speak for yourself not all of us. I NEVER tried to get someone to sign a severance on the spot. I offer to go over it with them at the time or any later date. I encourage them to take it home and read it. I give them # days to sign and the date it has to be returned and how payroll will be handled in the interim depending on the state. I let them know they may want to have an attorney review it. After all, a lawyer wrote it. I also go over benefits and COBRA, filing for unemployment (when appropriate). I do not fire or lay someone off. That is their manager's decision and job to do. There is a difference between HR pros and HR hacks.

Jen, stop. Not all HR professionals are assholes and do these things. Some of us work very hard for our employees and rhetoric should not be a blanket statement.

People don’t understand that HR is there to protect the employer and doesn’t give af about the employee.

This doesn’t reflect all of HR. Instead of broad generalizations, let’s help people figure out whether their HR is safe to confide in because that’s the real question worth asking. I spend significant time building psychological safety precisely because posts like this erode it.
I’d ask that we move away from the sweeping claims. Generalizing an entire profession as adversarial doesn’t inform people it just scares them away from resources that might genuinely help.

I was placed on a PIP and I was able to find a ton of evidence to send to HR to where I was taken off of the PIP 3 weeks later. PIPs are so ridiculous

I was put on a PIP, met the expectations before the deadline but was told I couldn’t be taken off it even with 100% improvement. Then when my day for the deadline shows up, my manager was “too busy to have a meeting” to take me off the PIP. The DAY after I spoke to HER boss, after consulting with her for WEEKS to address issues I had with a variety of things, I got let go. My performance was never the problem. She just didn’t like me.

just so you know, YOU CAN collect unemployment if you get released on a PIP. you can also collect if you refuse to go on PIP.

Why is lt 21 days to sign the severance if you're over 40? What factor does age play into length of time for signing?? Can you please explain this further?

Dinky Fleming :
If you think a PIP has a pre-determined outcome, then you have pre-determined it. I’m and HR manager who manages HR pros, and I’ve seen many many people succeed after a PIP. Also, depending on your state, companies may not have to provide your employment file. Only some state require they provide it.

Can we normalize that some companies know, share, and enact good practices. Like, sometimes PIPs are just written clarity to improve performance and not an administrative step towards dismissal.
