LI-900 is an ultra-lightweight, high-temperature thermal insulation material developed by Lockheed for the Space Shuttle's thermal protection system. It is composed almost entirely of ultrafine quartz fibers (approximately 99.9% silicon dioxide), and approximately 94% of its volume is air, resulting in exceptionally low thermal conductivity. With a density of just 144 kg/m³, the material can withstand temperatures up to 1200°C, effectively protecting the spacecraft structure during reentry. Even after intense heating, heat barely transfers into the tiles, which has become one of NASA's most famous technology demonstrations. The main drawback of LI-900 is its low mechanical strength — the material crumbles easily and does not withstand impacts well, so denser insulation materials were used in the most stressed areas. LI-900 is considered one of the most effective high-temperature thermal insulation materials developed for space technology and continues to serve as a benchmark for the development of modern thermal protection systems. #nasa #physics #sciencetok #astrophysics
