If you watch the making-of documentary on the Shout factory Blu-ray, Bryan Spicer actually goes into it. According to him, a lot of what she shot was for a deleted training scene they shot in a Japanese zen garden that was dialogue heavy that (he admitted) wasn't working. The studio saw the footage of the scene and shut down production for a bit because of how much they hated it. He convinced then to keep production going and instead they'd cut the scene and rework the sequence to focus more on the action stuff they had greenlit the movie on. He was also VERY adamant that he had NO hand in replacing Mariska Hargitay, she was doing a great job and very lovely, that it was a decision by the studio/producers, and he doesn't know if they blamed for the scene not working or if they just didn't like her
