“Good Luck, Babe!” is a song by American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, released as a standalone single on April 5, 2024, following her 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The song was written by Roan, Daniel Nigro, and Justin Tranter. Its initial writing session took place in November 2022, when the song was developed under the working title “Good Luck, Jane!” before the title was changed to “Good Luck, Babe!”. The song focuses on a relationship between two women in which one person is unwilling or unable to acknowledge her romantic and emotional feelings toward another woman. Roan described the central idea as a common situation within queer relationships involving someone who is struggling to come to terms with themselves, and characterized the song as wishing well to someone who is avoiding their true feelings. The narrative therefore centers on denial, emotional avoidance, compulsory heterosexuality, and the consequences of attempting to suppress an attraction that continues to exist. Rather than presenting the situation as a conventional breakup, the song describes a conflict between personal feelings and the decision to pursue relationships that conform to heterosexual expectations. The narrator addresses the other woman directly and describes the ways she might attempt to deny the relationship, including dating men and creating explanations for her feelings. The title functions as a deliberately ambiguous farewell: “good luck” can be understood as both a conventional expression of goodwill and a sarcastic acknowledgment that continuing to avoid those feelings may ultimately prove impossible. Musically, “Good Luck, Babe!” is primarily a synth-pop song with prominent string arrangements and an energetic, theatrical production. Daniel Nigro described the production as unusually large in scale, with numerous string parts contributing to its dramatic sound. The contrast between the song’s upbeat pop production and its subject matter creates a distinction between its musical presentation and its narrative. Roan also wrote the bridge of the song separately during the later stages of its development. “Good Luck, Babe!” was not included on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and was released several months after the album, functioning as a new single during the album’s promotional cycle. Its release coincided with Roan’s increasing visibility through touring and festival performances in 2024. The song subsequently became one of her most commercially successful releases and contributed significantly to the wider public recognition of her music. Its subject matter, particularly its depiction of a woman struggling to accept a same-sex attraction, also placed the song within a broader tradition of queer pop music addressing identity, repression, and the tension between personal desire and social expectations.
