@nutritionsmadesimple: Ask A Cardiothoracic Surgeon: The Association Of Sleep Apnea And Cardiovascular Disease Explained By A Cardiothoracic Double Board Certified Surgeon DR Michael Richman. Dr. Michael Richman a double board certified cardiothoracic surgeon. In 2025, an estimated 80 million adults in the United States suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). In today’s video, I discuss how (OSA) is independently associated with a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, coronary artery disease(why lipoprotein testing for your cholesterol is so important), atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke, and pulmonary hypertension, with prevalence of OSA reaching 40% to 80% in patients with these conditions. At the end of the video I discussed what the current recommendations are of who should have a work up by a specialist in Sleep medicine. My poor husband, 68, has both central sleep apnea and occlusive sleep apnea. Thankfully he is very compliant with wearing his cpap every single night.

I never realized the epidemic of OSA until I changed from ICU to same day surgery. An an RN, it's incredibly difficult to get patients home after surgery because so many of them appear to have OSA. So I keep them post op for 5 or 6 hours until they are fully awake, but I know they will go home and not oxygenated well when they go to sleep. Or I send a lot of them home with oxygen. At least two patients I see a day I have to do one or the other. I wish surgeons would screen for OSA before surgery. I feel like 50% of Americans have it and don't know!

I just found you🥰 scrolling through a bunch of different topics, this one has hit home. About 12 yrs ago my wonderful PCP, board certified Internal Medicine, diagnosed me with severe sleep apnea, 40/hr. I tried and tried to wear a cpap but I couldn’t breathe and so I was noncompliant. I kept telling him and we adjusted pressure settings but nothing was working and I gave up. I’ve aged and my cardiac risks started raising their ugly heads. Listen up! I changed my diet to mostly plant based, started lifting weights and finally lost 30 lbs. Cholesterol stayed around 100. I happened to have my Lipo an and b done and found my them to be moderate so a Coranary Calcium scan was done that was moderately high. My cardiologist attempted a stress test that I failed due to back pain. I was then sent for a Cardiac Echo that showed good blood flow. I was started on a low dose statin, cut out all nuts, use only olive oil in spare amounts and I had another sleep study. It turns out I needed a biPap and I am compliant with it. What a difference!! I sleep 8-9 hrs without waking up. In 6 weeks I brought my cholesterol down to 61, changed my blood pressure medication to Telmisartin. I’m 5’3 and weight is 165. I’ve never weighed less than 135 and my cardiologist prescribed Zepbound
