Stephen King wrote the horror novel The Shining, which was published in 1977.He and his wife Tabitha visited and stayed at the Stanley Hotel (specifically in Room 217) in Estes Park, Colorado, in September 1974. Their stay occurred on the very last night of the season before the hotel closed for the winter, leaving them as the only guests.
