@mathmanx: Not to mention transferring skills into new environments… Chores don’t do this in the same way. I know that will be the argument, but there are pieces missing in it. And anyone can find justification for what they want to believe, but the brutal fact is that a small amount of homework 2-3 nights a week could mitigate a plethora of issues that are get worse over time.

I've never done homework. I refused to do any homework. I only do all the school work at school. I kept my school and p@ste life separate which is actually a better healthier boundary. And I didn't need homework to learn how to balance everything. Everyone else struggles with homework whereas I did all my "homework" at school and still had a good grade. So yall can miss me with that homework bullcrap.. also I graduated high school in 2008.

As long as it’s actually needed because “busy work” will just cause burn out.

Nope. Homework is acceptable only when they don't get their stuff done in class. By the time they get home from school there are very few precious hours they have before bedtime. As parents that is OUR time to teach them practical skills and just spend some time with them. Teachers are always complaining about parents trying to dictate what they do in their classrooms, but then expect US to let them dictate what we do with our kids at home by sending homework. I can understand giving a little over the Summer to mitigate some of the loss of info during breaks, but daily during the year just because? No. Luckily our school district doesn't do homework.

I'm sorry but as someone who had to stay up until 2:00 a.m. to finish my homework I will never agree with kids having homework at least not until high School. maybe I have a kindergarten student that had homework all the damn time. why do you need homework in kindergarten? and I don't mean stuff that's just simply talk to your mom and dad about stuff. I mean legitimate homework. I honest to goodness. think we should do away with homework until kids get older and even then I'm not assure I agree with it at all and I wasn't a bad student so I was Dean's list in national Honor society and I was in such a worn out State constantly because of the homework that the school assigned, it wasn't worth it

I dont believe in homework. they're only kids once. I'm not forcing my kids to come home from school and do hours of homework.

Former teacher here and I don’t agree with homework either. Longer term projects yes (with plenty of class time to complete), if you don’t finish your work in class yes you need to bring it home but I do not agree with giving kids “busy work”. There are too many issues with it

I do not believe in homework but! I do believe in the children either journaling, reading or being read to for at least 30/60 minutes depending on age. I do have time in my day where the kids can do homework type activities at school. I should also say that I was the School board president and a teacher at a very small alternative school I could really do our own schedule. What you found was the kids often read or wrote much longer than the allotted time. They were less stressed and intern had deeper relationships with their teachers.

I understand the concept, but also think that after school activities and chores meet the responsibility aspect. Especially if we also expect them to get enough sleep. Let them have time to be kids. Teach them to develop a work/home life balance.

Homework should be no more than (grade level - 1) * 5 minutes per night for the average student to complete. with a cap of 1 hour for highschoolers (that's total not per class). This is not a one size fits all, but the parents need to communicate if they are having issues.

For anyone who says teacher's work stops when they leave the building, let me just say as a child of 2 teacher parents, the work has to be done 80% at home.

I’m all for homework, but I do think kids shouldn’t have too much put on them. There have been times in my life when I had six classes that each assigned their own hour of homework.

my honors child was also a 504 (issues with reading comprehension) who stayed up till 1 or 2 am to do homework and had to be at school at 6 am. something needs to be corrected.

I mean a lot of kids have chores and other kinds of work after school. I agree kids need homework but it shouldn't be as much as it often is. homework shouldn't take more than like an hour ish in total, with all the classes. like I think 20 minutes of homework per class, and no class should be assigning homework every day

However, teachers do not need to get a child a 1/2 hr to 1 hr of homework every night. When all of their teachers do that they could end up with 5-7 hrs of homework each night & that is way to much.

I also go home and take care of my siblings, and my mom…and then sports like, homework is so dumb. Half of the time it’s not even for a grade.

im annoyed that my kids never have homework. apparently other kids do, but my kids always finish everything at school. but I think having things just for home, work, is so good for teaching responsibility.

I have no issues with a bit of homework and am all for it if my kids are not utilising class time appropriately. But we also need to have time for them to learn skills of living like laundry and cooking and cleaning. They need to learn how to be a functioning member of a household. They also need time to do those after school activities. If my kids don't get home until 4pm, by the time they do a chore or maybe 2, eat supper, shower etc. on a quiet night, that gives them maybe an hour or two. If they have a ton of homework, that leaves them no time to go outside and play or sit and relax or just have free time. I can remember having up to 2 hours of homework in highschool and it was nerve-wracking because I never had enough time.
