We normally think of dogs, rather than humans, as having a super-sharp sense of smell. But while it’s true dogs have more smell receptors than humans, ours are more widely connected in the brain. And we often under-appreciate how good the human sense of smell is. We can detect a trillion odours, and have such sensitive noses that we are able to detect the equivalent of a strong odorant dissolved in an Olympic sized pool. On this week’s episode of Change Your Mind with New Scientist, hosts Helen Thomson and Cat de Lange are talking about smell, and the powerful effect that this unsung sense can have on our brain health. Research has linked smell problems to numerous conditions, including depression and dementia, and new findings even suggest that training your sense of smell might help to improve your memory and protect your brain.
