@moji.learnjapanesedaily: Japanese writing looks intimidating, but once you see the pattern, you can’t unsee it. Kanji characters are basically visual building blocks — stack them and the meaning literally shows itself. One tree is a tree. Two trees? Woods. Three trees? A forest. It’s writing as visual poetry, and it’s been around for over 1,500 years. This is just the surface. There are over 50,000 kanji in existence, and Japanese kids memorize 1,026 of them before finishing elementary school. Some characters have 84 strokes. Others mean oddly specific things like “sunlight filtering through leaves” or “buying books and never reading them.” Save this for your next trip to Japan #japan #japanese #fyp #LearnOnTikTok

The power of hanzi is that it doesn't degrade over time due to dialect changes the way phonetic languages do. This is a civilizational superpower that keeps society from fracturing.

small corrections 🙏 从 and 众 are simplified chinese (japanese uses 従 and 衆). the rest are real kanji used everyday in japan!

While modern Japanese Kanji has deviated from modern Chinese characters (especially the simplified vs traditional versions), to call it "ancient Japanese" without any Chinese historical context feels like you're knowingly erasing/ignoring Chinese history.
It would be akin to calling Latin "Ancient American English."

you know that even Latin letters have the same origin, right? why do study more others than ourselves? do we take who we are for granted?
