For almost two years I have ceased to attend any social functions, just because I find it impossible to say to people: I am deaf.” He was 30 years old. In the same year, he wrote the Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major. We call it the “Spring Sonata” — a nickname Beethoven never gave it, but one that stuck because there is simply no other word for what this music sounds like. The violin enters immediately, singing a melody so open and warm that it feels like a window being thrown open on the first morning that actually feels like the season has changed. This is Beethoven before the darkness fully arrived. He could still hear — partially, unevenly, with effort. He knew what was coming. He had written the letters. He had seen the doctors. He understood that the silence was not a temporary thing. And he wrote this. Not the Moonlight Sonata’s haunted stillness. Not the Pathétique’s fierce grief.
