The scam is when the college/university tells you you have to take courses (for credits $) that have nothing to do with your major. IMO based on experience.

my professors encouraged us to read both Progressive and Conservative articles, listen to speeches, etc and then wrote compare and contrast papers and try to come to a general consensus that we as individuals saw

I mean sure it’s not a scam in a sense you know what you are signing up for (mostly) but it’s a scam in many other ways. A lot of filler classes, out dated sources or methods depending on the degree path, a lot of theory and not actual implementation of what you are studying to do or will be doing after college the list goes on.
