@matt.gabz.gabato: “Look at how big this crown-of-thorns starfish is. As you can see in the video, when they grow this large, they can quickly destroy coral reefs by feeding on them. That’s why proper monitoring and control are important to protect our marine ecosystems.”#StopCoralKillers #OceanAdvocacy #ActForTheOcean #ReefDefenders #advocacy

For context for people who missed it, These particular species of starfish eat coral, their natural predators were over hunted for their high sell value. Now, there is a boom in this species’ population, thus causing damage to reefs in the area. Normally, this isn’t an issue as long as its natural predators kept up, as they eat any unnecessary coral so that other flora/fauna can flourish as well, making a balanced ecosystem. Unfortunately, as it was said before, the predators of these starfish, were over hunted, so now they are reproducing with little resistance, which causes heavy harm to the reefs. They inject them with a type of vinegar as their bodies can’t process it properly. Yes, it is unfortunate such lengths have to be met, but they are venomous, so touching them and relocating them properly would take too much time and effort for what it would be worth in the end. They do not feel the same as we feel as their central nervous system is built differently as ours. I can imagine it isn’t “pleasant” to them, so to speak, but it’s this, or we allow heavy damage to the local ecosystems.

The problem is, there are a lot of farms around these areas and they use fertilisers which run-off into the water with heavy rain.. the fertilises supercharge the growth of plankton and the baby starfish eat these, which intern causes massive growth of the starfish….. secondly the area around these reefs is very good fishing and it has been decided that humans catching the fish is more important, then these fish keeping the baby starfish under control… the problem is humans created the problem, and another lot of humans are trying to control it.. pretty much sums up humanity🥺🥺
