@sophiasmithgaler: If you grew up in Britain, it’s likely “modern languages” at school meant three particular languages. But have you ever wondered: why? My book How To Kill A Language is available to buy now!
The second language we should all be learning mandatory is British sign language

Learning a romance and/or germanic language actually teaches you a lot about English and gives a strong base to Interpret other European languages too.

I’m a secondary teacher (not MFL) and at my school the MFL department are trying to encourage students to take GCSEs in their “home languages”. So this is the first year some students will be doing exams for Italian and Urdu. We have so many other languages spoken but unfortunately not many have a strong ability in writing in their other languages and we don’t have the staff with the knowledge to support them. It’s an extra add on the students have to figure out on their own.

In France they just started (I think, I’ve been out of primary school for a while) offering Arab as a language learning class, which I found very cool and I lowkey wish I had had that because it’s such a useful and history pact language.

In Texas high school we had French because Louisiana is next-door and Spanish because Mexico is next-door and German because there’s towns that spoke German, and Latin

When I was in school one of my teachers mentioned this. He said we really should be learning Mandarin and Hindi since they're more popular, and also pointed out how useless the language classes are

I learned spanish, and i'm doing it for a-level, but i do feel like welsh would have been a nicer option as it's literally a national language of the UK. although, i do live in england.

Learning any foreign language opens a new dimension, especially if you go and live in that country. French opens the door to France, Switzerland, Belgium, Morocco, Quebec and much more
