@johndelony: We way overcomplicate being a good parent. Your kids don’t need a perfect childhood. They need time and attention. They need to know: Do you see me? Do you know me? Do you like being with me? That’s the stuff they’ll carry forever. Go spray each other with a hose in the backyard. Grab a cheap bag of water balloons on the way home from work. Dig a hole in the dirt together. Little kids don’t care if you’re doing it “right.” They just want you there. One day, they’ll tell those stories for the rest of their lives. Nerf guns, I raised boys, they still expect some kind of soft foam dart guns as adults every Christmas.

one of my first memories remains holding my dad's hand as we entered a roller skating rink and me being enamored with the colorful patterns on the carpet, excited to spend time with my dad

I remember my dad carrying me on his shoulder to go get ice cream. We must have done that a dozen times, but I remember one moment where the worker was doting on me and I hid into my dad's shoulder. I remember him saying "it's okay, buddy". In fact, I remember he would always answer the phone saying "hey buddy." He is no longer with us, and although I didn't share those specific stories at his funeral, I did share others that were just like them. Being present is not always easy when you are working parents, but even small moments can make a huge impact.

Time and attention. Laser focused attention. Meaning put the phone down. You don’t want your kids to remember that dad was on his phone all the time

Agreed. You don't need to build big moments for them to remember. You know some of my favorite memories of my dad growing up were? Him taking me to the community center to play racket ball in the summer. Him helping me with my homework and playing catch with me. Just be part of their lives

My dad was a man of few words but his actions showed how much he enjoyed being a dad and how much he loved us.20 years later and we still share great memories of him.

Make a random cake and have an Un-Birthday Party. My kids are 29, 35, and 37, and they still talk about those parties!

My favorite memories of my dad are him teaching me to ride a bike, how to swim and helping him around outside while he talked about what we were doing. Also, helping out with the cars and anything around the house. I have never put all this together and it softened my heart. We don’t speak, and I know it’s for the best, but I have been in a wave of sadness the past two days for what could not be. I’ve been praying for peace and warmth, and here you are! Because sometimes, angels 🙏🏼

My great-uncle took me on a long walk through a park, and we just looked at things and talked. I was about 8. I'm 71 now, and the beautiful memory still brings tears to my eyes.

My kids favorite memories are the days I said.... let's go find an adventure. Walk in the woods discovering nature, a picnic at the park. It is not complicated

This is so true. My husband's parents have passed now. He constantly talks about how his Dad would come home from a full day of manual labor and he would have an obstacle course set up in the yard and his poor father being put through the paces 🤣. He talks about how his Dad and him would go grocery shopping on Saturday mornings and he'd get his favorite cookies.

Our son told us how important it was that we came to ALL his games. He was really upset that some of his friends were depressed and on meds because their parents haven't been there for them. He said "You go to their games. You show up!"

The best quote I heard recently, and I can not remember who said it, but.... "People say they would die for their kids, but so many people aren't LIVING for their kids".
