From what I understand about the "real books" thing is in reference to books that will deeply inform you and give you that information, understanding and critical thinking instead of something that's more lax or entertainment centered. I do think that as someone who doesn't like romance novels but enjoys fiction that this is worded poorly and not very open about nuances like these.
