Many liquid antibiotics are mixed with water at the pharmacy. Once they’re mixed, they only stay good for a short period of time. For example, Augmentin suspension is commonly discarded after 10 days. Your child’s dose may also be different now. Pediatric antibiotic doses can depend on weight, the type of infection, and the exact strength of the bottle. Also, the next illness may not even need antibiotics. Many coughs, colds, sore throats, and runny noses are viral — and antibiotics do not treat viruses.
