After the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, airlines introduced stricter “positive passenger-bag matching” rules. The basic idea is: * If a passenger checks a suitcase into the aircraft hold, that passenger is normally expected to board the plane too. * If the passenger does not board, airlines usually remove their checked baggage before departure. * This rule was designed to stop someone placing a bomb in checked luggage and then not getting on the flight themselves. The Lockerbie bombing happened when a bomb hidden inside a suitcase exploded aboard Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, killing 270 people.
