Major respect for this, it’s so respectful to the people who spent their hard-earned money to come see her, and she wants to give them the show they deserve. I LOVE seeing moments like this from professionals—especially as an aspiring singer because it humanizes those at the top, making it not seem so impossible to be a performer

how do you do this in auditions without seeming like a diva? I've auditioned people that do this quite rudly and makes me never wanna restart my songs but sometimes I need to replace myself!! 🥰

The most harrowing singing moment in my life was when I was asked to sing a solo at the Police Christmas Mass at the cathedral. Attendance normally around 1000. It was a huge honour but it was just going to be me and the organ scholar rather than with the choir. Me standing on the organ loft totally exposed. And then the organ scholar gave me the most enormous chord of all time. But didn’t like leave the last note for me to sing. I utterly panicked. Oh and the solo verse is in accompanied. So I start. I know I’m off, so I stop and start again. Then stop and start again because I know I’m still off. Then just have to keep going and at the end of the verse the organ comes in and I’m MILES off. I literally fled sobbing. My Dad (professional opera singer) was furious - but yeah he told me the same. You can always ask to stop. Ask for your note. It took a couple of months but I got over it. Oh and I was 10.

semi-related: I saw Nickelback some years ago and Chad started a song and botched like the third chord. he broke off and started laughing about it. The crowd laughed with him. it was one of the most notable lessons about public performing I've ever witnessed. energy is everything

So much respect! It’s really difficult to correct your pitch that much while singing! I’d say impossible even. So the only way to fix it is to stop and start again!

Thank you for this! We teach performers so young that they’re not allowed to ask for things like this, and it’s such a shame. I still remember the trauma of being in 8th grade, auditioning for the school musical, missing my entrance on the audition track, and when I asked to restart was told flat-out no… IN 8TH GRADE. We have so much more we need to be doing to support performers properly and encourage them to advocate for themselves. ❤️
