Most birds, like songbirds and raptors, possess a specialized "tendon-locking mechanism" in their legs that allows them to sleep on branches without falling. When a bird bends its leg to land on a branch, specialized tendons (flexor tendons) running down the back of the leg tighten. This forces their toes to automatically curl tightly around the perch. Because the mechanism is entirely mechanical, the bird does not need to actively use its muscles to hold on. The weight of the bird's body keeps the joint bent and the grip locked, allowing them to sleep passively even in heavy wind.
