The fact that Yamato basically chose Nero in DMC 4 I always thought showed that he cared. It embedded a piece of his soul into his arm basically, he was there for most of it.

Just cannot get over the fact that he had no idea Nero was his son when he took the Yamato back. I meaaaan, you see a dude whose looks a lot like younger version of you and it didn't ring any bell? 😭 Idk if it worse if he thought at that time that Nero is Dante's. Also, probably all these times Nero thinks Dante is his dad and is waiting for him to be acknowledged. 🥺

As far as I remember, in Japan, giving a personal item to a child is a recognition of paternity. Although I think it's obvious, considering that Vergil gave away the most precious thing he has. (I apologize in advance for the mistakes, writing through a translator)
