@theleakyboob: Do you know the International Breastfeeding Symbol?  My 2year old got excited and ran off from looking at monkeys all because he saw the International Breastfeeding Symbol.  Yes, he is 2.5 years old, yes he is still breastfeeding usually twice a day, no, that’s not what this post is about.  Moving on, the International Breastfeeding Symbol turns 20 years old this year!  In a 2021 Medium piece, Peggy O’Mara of Mothering Magazine shared the Story of the International Breastfeeding Symbol. After Dr. Jack Newman pointed out how common baby bottles were with images and messaging around infant care and baby feeding, the team at Mothering decided to host a contest to find a design to become the International Breastfeeding Symbol in 2006.  Such a symbol could be used in heavily trafficked public areas to increase public awareness of breastfeeding, designate breastfeeding and family friendly facilities in public, and to provide an alternative image to that of a baby bottle. The goal was the symbol would be compatible with the Symbol Signs created by the US Department of Transportation and the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) and it may one day be adopted by AIGA. Mothering Magazine recommended the symbol be used in large public places where people stay for extended periods of time, such as airports, malls, amusement parks, conferences, convention halls, or expos; to designate a breastfeeding friendly room, in professional offices; retail stores or restaurants to designate the establishment as breastfeeding friendly; and in businesses, to designate a lactation room.  Over time the symbol took on a much more diversified usage and not only is used around the world to designate breastfeeding friendly and family friendly rooms in airports (spaces now required in all major US airports), it has also been used in activism, awareness campaigns, and events.  Today The International Breastfeeding Symbol is part of the global visual language utilized to convey critical information without written words. The symbol is used to indicate breastfeeding friendly spaces, lactation rooms for quiet private spaces to feed or pump, and for political action (such as legislation or nurse-ins, etc.) The symbol is easy to recognize, accessible, and simple to reproduce.  The International Breastfeeding Symbol is copyright free.
