Did you know some of your favourite films are inspired by stories that are hundreds, even thousands, of years old? 🌿🎬 From ogres and boggarts to will-o’-the-wisps and water spirits, filmmakers have been borrowing from folklore for generations. Long before these creatures appeared on our screens, people genuinely believed they roamed forests, haunted homes, guarded rivers or guided travellers through the night. In this video I’ve picked just a few examples: 🧅 Shrek – inspired by the ogres of European folklore. 🪡 Coraline – echoes old tales of supernatural beings luring children away. ⚡ Harry Potter – Rowling reimagined creatures like the boggart from English folklore. ❄️ Frozen II – the Nøkk comes from Scandinavian legends of dangerous water spirits. 🏹 Brave – the glowing wisps are rooted in Scottish folklore. 🦁 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Mr Tumnus is a faun from ancient mythology and folklore. I love discovering the real stories hidden behind the films we grew up with. Folklore isn’t just something found in old books, it still shapes the stories we watch, the traditions we keep and the landscapes around us. If you’d like to explore even more forgotten customs, seasonal traditions and the folklore of the British countryside, I’d love to welcome you to The Folkletter. Each month I send a hand-illustrated piece of snail mail inspired by British folklore, complete with a letter, an illustrated print and a collection of themed stickers. Every edition explores a different part of the folklore calendar, helping you slow down and rediscover the stories hidden in the changing seasons. The July Folkletter is now open and I’d love for you to join us. What other films have you spotted that are inspired by folklore? I think this might need to become a series… 🍂 #folklore #britishfolklore #mythology #filmfacts #snailmail
