@depotadventures: Melbourne‘s hook turns are one of the mundanities that a lot of locals forget are bizarre and remarkable. It’s one of my favourite things to point out on our walking tour when we have international guests.
Anyone that rode a bike in Taiwan would be familiar with a ‘double hook turn’

As a driver for more than 40 years, I have driven in many places around the world , and this is the most confusing and nerve racking rule I’ve ever encountered. Someone please explain the logic.

It's not when their light turns red, it's when the light they are turning into goes green. Everyone does seem to ignore that though.

And because Melbourne is a grid planned city you can do what us locals call a blocky to avoid them. So go forward at lights and take 3 lefts around the block and your heading where you need to be.

NJ has jughandles which are lanes on the right to do left turns. They’re actually separated so not as confusing as this though.
