One of my favs is a canonical reason for why you can come back after dying. It obviously doesn’t fit in every game but it’s nice when a game can squeeze it in.

Cohesive Musical Motifs. it feels like too high a bar but Outer Wilds and Undertale do this excellently. I love good music in games and I love it even more when you can discern meaning from the motifs playing at a specific part

In the original zelda link’s awakening a kid says "Grown ups say that you need to save regularly, but I have no idea what that means !" Always makes me laugh

About that scene in Despolote, the creator got his irl parents to voice his parents in game. So in that scene your listening to his parents just have a conversation

this goes for all media types but truly descriptive captions- like when captions explain that the music has changed from a normal melody to a more eerie, off key melody. as a HoH player who loves music as a storytelling device it’s something i really appreciate!

Agree with so much of this. Game’s that are aware they are games are so much more successful to me that ones thinking that fishing for TV adaptions. An addition to your list I’d make is “game levels/quests/mechanics that feel like a conversation with the designer rather than just content”. Think BOTW/TOTK shrines. You can feel the designer communicating to you unlike lots of AAA open world side content which is just busywork.

When there’s a diegetic reason for a camera following the player. The most recent example is Motorslice where you, personally, are a little drone following along the person actually doing the things and this is addressed in game.

Kratos being referred to as an “angry dad” is despicable. He did everything for his son.

cool dad bonus: In Chicory: a Colorful Tale you can call your mom for small hint on what do next, but if you let your dad on the phone is straight up tells you EXACTLY what to do and how many screens to walk to 😂

I love when changing your gear in game actually changes your appearance. Of course that was a much bigger deal back when games were more limited.

my favourite video game bullshit explanation is in Disco Elysium when Kim talks about the "Jamrock shuffle" where Jamrock detectives are known for running back and forth a lot looking at stuff. I think he'll also make a comment about running a bunch at the end of one of the days

I really really like when a character is giving a tutorial and acknowledges that button prompts. Like “Our people have a saying that has been passed down for generations, but the meaning has been lost… maybe you can parse it out? ‘Press Select to open the Menu.’ Who knows what it could mean”

Visual cues alongside audio cues! I cant aleays hear audio cues but i love when its accompanied by a visible cue. Or that there is an option to turn on visible cues for things!

When the writers make jokes about repetitive voice lines. Example: Mass Effect 3: Citadel DLC has numerous instances. My fave is when Fake!Shep says “I should go” and Real!Shep comments on how they say it and how often.

I love when In games the menus are not just menus, but things the characters are holding or using. For example,in The forest, even if the crafting it's very unrealistic all of it comes from a notebook the character is reading,or the maps are actual maps the character it's holding. This also happens in the remake of Silent hill 2 or TLOU 2,and you can see how the map gets more and more worn out when you're using it. Or the whole pip boy in Fallout. It's a nice bit of immersion that adds to the game I think

Somewhat related to the father point, I loved discovering in Xenoblade Chronicles that Riki, the marketable plushie boy, is 40 years old and has a happy wife and children.

In horizon forbidden west I love watching the npcs in each village go about their business like the oseram tribe logging and splitting wood and actually seeing the machines working or when you can see them getting more drunk as the in game time gets closer to nightfall.

i LOVE an immersive UI. ena dream bbq blew me out of the water for that. i love when games have “unnecessary” customization, like warframe too. its not just the fashion, you can change the appearance of just about anything you as the player can get your hands on.
