Not sense of smell... more likely is that all of the mist creatures use a form of echolocation (either sonic or electrical) to locate prey in the mist. As proof I offer that the people in the store are invisible to the creatures, but as soon as they touch the mist they are immediately hunted. The mist serves as a medium for the creatures to sense their prey.
