📍 Austin, Texas 🎨 One of my favorite things about Austin is how often you can stumble across a piece of art and discover there’s an entire story behind the person who created it. This mural is signed by Carmen Rangel, an Austin-born visual artist and organizer whose work can be found throughout the city. Rangel is known for her colorful painted murals and mosaics, with recurring themes of nature, environmentalism, diversity, and Mexican-American and Indigenous culture. Her connection to Austin runs especially deep. Rangel grew up here, studied studio art at Austin Community College and earned her degree from St. Edward’s University. She has spent roughly a decade creating public and community-driven art around Austin, including commissions for Austin Community College, Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin Parks Foundation and other organizations. Nature isn’t just decoration in her work, either. Rangel has explained that growing up surrounded by Austin’s nature and water shaped her artistic perspective. Her work frequently explores ideas like creation, growth, resilience and nurturing through colorful natural and botanical imagery. That makes this piece particularly interesting to stop and study: a powerful bird dominates the composition, surrounded by the sun, water, geometric forms and bold earth-inspired colors. I couldn’t find a published artist statement identifying the meaning of this specific mural, so I don’t want to assign symbolism to Rangel’s imagery that she hasn’t personally documented. What we can see is how naturally the piece fits within the broader relationship between culture, nature and place found throughout her body of work. Rangel also co-founded The Mosaic Workshop, where discarded tile, glass and ceramics are transformed into permanent public artwork—combining community art with sustainability.
