there are things people only notice when they are beautiful. a tree, for instance, is admired for the way its leaves move when the wind arrives—how gently they sway, how their shadows fall like a hand placed softly over a tired forehead. people sit beneath them when the day becomes unbearable. they call the shade comforting. they never see the roots, how far they travel or how much ground they break just to keep the tree standing. they see calm leaves and comfort, never realizing that beneath them lies a destructive root, restless and searching. perhaps that is what people see when they look at me. they call me understanding. they see someone who listens, looks beyond mistakes, and makes their storms feel lighter. but what they do not see is that beneath those calm leaves is a root seeking understanding too. the person everyone calls understanding is sometimes the person quietly begging to understand. understanding has a price, and i have paid for it with sleep and peace of mind. it has kept me awake at two in the morning, replaying conversations and deciphering silence. i have studied pauses, changes in tone, shorter replies, and unfamiliar distances, trying to understand what was never said. i remember what people said, what they almost said, and what they chose not to say. i remember fragments of conversations and carry them like pieces of something unfinished, wondering if somewhere inside them is the reason everything changed. while people collect achievements, i collect reasons. they collect milestones; i collect explanations. i remember when someone changed and wonder what happened before it. i wonder why someone left, why someone stayed, why something once safe became unfamiliar. i thought understanding could protect me from pain. so i asked, then asked again, until sometimes the person on the other side became tired. i understand now that constantly interrogating someone can make them fed up, even when the questions come from care. maybe the answer they gave was all they could think of, all they could give. everyone has a history and a past we were never there to witness. everyone carries reasons and choices that belong to them. they know what they are doing, or they believe they do, and sometimes we have to accept that their answer may never satisfy our need for certainty. understanding was my safety. i thought it could protect me from pain. but the thing that once protected me slowly became a burden. i began carrying questions that were never mine to carry. i believed every silence needed meaning, every distance needed a reason, and every ending needed a conclusion. i forgot that sometimes people simply choose. sometimes the answer is ordinary: they are tired, they cannot explain themselves, or they have nothing more to give. sometimes that is all they have. we admire patience without asking its cost. we rest beneath someone's shade and forget the tree stands under the same sun. we say, “you understand me so well,” without asking who understands them. maybe compassion is accepting that people have histories we will never know. not every silence is a message, and not every unanswered question needs to be chased until it destroys our peace. then one day, a leaf fell. the wind passed, the branches trembled, and slowly, the leaf loosened its hold. it drifted down beside the roots, and for a moment, everything seemed still. i realized that not everything needs to be understood or held onto. some things simply leave, seasons change, and certain silences are not mine to disturb. the tree has endured storms, winters, and countless falling leaves, yet it still stands. perhaps peace is found in accepting what i cannot change and letting things return to where they belong. maybe i was never meant to hold every leaf or carry every question. maybe i was simply meant to trust my roots, let go when i need to, and keep standing through every season. ~ z. #randomthoughts #life
