Using new imaging technology, researchers at Columbia University found a single can of Coke contains 3.74 million micro and nanoplastic particles, 78% of which were nanoplastics. Nanoplastics are smaller than 1 micrometer, small enough to enter your bloodstream, cross the blood-brain barrier, and reach your organs. Microplastics range from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters. These accumulate in your gut, lungs, and have been found in arterial plaques linked to a 4.5x higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. But if it's an aluminum can, why would it have plastic? Every aluminum can is lined with plastic on the inside. Without it the acid would corrode the metal. That liner is either BPA-based epoxy or newer alternatives made from acrylics, polyesters, or polyethylene. (1) Coke's pH of 2.37 degrades the liner over time. (2) CO2 bubbles physically scrub particles off the surface, sugar increases the release, and it sits sealed for months through shipping and temperature swings before you crack it open.
