You don't owe every relationship the full version of you. Especially not your emotionally immature in-laws. Read that again if you need to. Maybe you walk into every family gathering hoping this will be the time. The time they finally ask a real question about your life. The time your boundaries get respected without a debate. The time you get to be fully yourself and actually feel received. And then it doesn't happen. Again. Here's the thing: wanting a deeper connection with your in-laws isn't naive. It makes sense. They're tied to someone you love, and you want it all to feel like family. But hoping for depth and receiving depth are two different things, and some relationships simply aren't built to hold all of you right now. Emotional immaturity can look like: - Getting defensive when you share a feeling - Turning your news into a story about them - Giving advice you never asked for - Guilt trips, score keeping, or the silent treatment - Treating a boundary like a personal attack - Talking about you to your partner instead of to you When you keep offering your most tender self to people who can't meet it, you usually end up hurt, exhausted, and quietly wondering if you're "too much." You're not. You're handing something precious to someone who doesn't know how to hold it. So here's your permission slip. You get to bring a version of you that can stay connected AND stay protected. That's not fake. That's wise. You're still you. Still kind, still present, still showing up to the birthday dinner. You're just choosing what to share based on what's actually safe, not on what you wish were true. What that can look like: → Keeping conversations light: the kids, the garden, the show everyone's watching → Sharing updates, not your inner world. "Work's been busy" instead of the full story → Deciding before you arrive which topics are off the table for you → Having a calm phrase ready, like "I'm going to pass on that one," then changing the subject → Setting a time limit on the visit and honoring it → Taking a walk, a bathroom break, or a quiet minute in the car to reset → Leaning into the relationships where your whole self IS welcome And a big one: talk with your partner ahead of time. You're a team. Agree on what you each need, how you'll signal each other, and who handles what when things get tense. It's often kinder and more effective for your partner to address things with their own family than for you to carry it alone. You might feel some grief in this. That's real. It can hurt to accept that someone may never see all of you. Let yourself feel it. Grieving the relationship you hoped for is often what frees you to find peace in the one you actually have. And protecting yourself doesn't have to be forever. People can grow. If your in-laws show you over time that they can handle more, you can choose to offer more. You get to decide what you share, based on how you're treated. A few questions to sit with: 1. What parts of me feel safe to share with them right now? 2. What do I keep offering, hoping this time will be different? 3. What would it feel like to stop auditioning for their approval? Connection doesn't require full access. You can love people, show up for people, and still save the most tender parts of yourself for the people who've earned them. You're not closing the door. You're choosing which rooms to open. #inlaws #emotionalimmaturity #boundaries #familydynamics #healthyboundaries #marriageadvice #couplestherapy #therapistsoftiktok #mentalhealthtok #peoplepleaser #selfprotection #familyboundaries
