Why Are My Grapes Dying Before Harvest? Could This Be a Fungus? In this video, I show my grapevines just weeks before harvest—only something’s gone wrong. The grapes are shriveling, darkening, and dying on the vine. The leaves still look mostly healthy, but the fruit is deteriorating fast. I suspect a fungal issue, possibly black rot, downy mildew, or Botrytis bunch rot—all common problems that can hit just before harvest and ruin a good crop. Black rot typically shows up as sunken black spots on the fruit. Downy mildew may affect the leaves first, but fruit damage can follow if left untreated. Botrytis often causes gray mold and shriveling. Other potential causes could include: Poor airflow around the vines High humidity or excessive rain during ripening Insect damage opening up grapes to secondary infection Lack of preventative fungicide or organic treatments earlier in the season If you're a vintner, grape grower, or homesteader with vineyard experience, I’d love your feedback.
