In February 2015, Twenty Coptic Orthodox Christians and one Ghanaian man were taken to a beach in Libya by Islamic State militants. The men were given a final opportunity to renounce their faith, yet they remained faithful to Jesus even in the face of death. The 21st man is remembered as Matthew Ayariga. His background remains somewhat mysterious. Some Christian reports have said that Matthew was not originally a Christian and was so moved by the courage of the other 20 men that he chose to identify himself with Christ. Other church sources say his religious background before his death is uncertain and that he may already have been a Christian. What is well documented in Christian accounts is the declaration attributed to him when questioned by his captors: “Their God is my God.” Matthew knew what identifying himself with the other believers could mean. Yet instead of distancing himself from them, he stood alongside them. The 21 men were subsequently killed, with witnesses and family accounts remembering several of them calling upon the name of Jesus in their final moments. Their testimony did not disappear on that beach. The Coptic Orthodox Church recognized the men as martyrs, and in 2023 Pope Francis announced that all 21 would be included in the Roman Martyrology, describing their sacrifice as a powerful sign of Christian unity. Their story challenges every follower of Jesus: Is Christ worth everything to us? Jesus said, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” — Matthew 10:32 These men could have chosen silence. Instead, they chose faithfulness. The world tried to silence their testimony—but more than a decade later, people around the world are still hearing about Jesus because of it.
