@7thpanzerdivision7: The Battle of Westerplatte was the opening battle of World War II in Europe, fought from September 1 to September 7, 1939, when Polish defenders on the Westerplatte peninsula resisted German forces, including the battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein. It became a powerful symbol of Polish resistance because the garrison held out far longer than the Germans expected. German naval guns began the attack early on September 1, 1939, and the assault was followed by heavy bombardment and repeated attacks on the Polish position. The Polish force was small and isolated, but it defended the depot for nearly a week before surrendering on September 7. Westerplatte is widely remembered as the first major clash of the war and a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds. In Poland, it remains one of the most famous memorial sites of the 1939 campaign.
