John Singer Sargent is a true master of portrait painting — so I decided to challenge myself by studying one of his works. I kicked things off by analyzing his color palette, zooming way out and almost “pixelating” the image to really see how he built his tones. After that came the sketch, some confident brushstrokes… and at first, it felt like everything was clicking. Then I reached the details — and that’s where it all started to unravel. The face was a mess, and trying to match Sargent’s precision was way tougher than I’d imagined. I kept pushing through, refining bit by bit, and surprisingly, the clothing ended up being my favorite part to paint. After a few final tweaks (and a warm filter to balance the colors), I called it done. It’s far from perfect — the eyes still bother me — but I learned so much from the process.
