Broadway is not failing because of ticket prices. Of course it matters how expensive seat tickets are, but people are still willing to pay. The main problem is that they are spending WAY too much money on sets. It should not cost around 30 million for a broadway set.

Honestly I’m really shocked to see it close… I feel like it had so much attention and had people constantly raving about it. I knew it was starting to drag and not doing the best, but I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t try to bring in a new cast or something first too.

And then when someone mentions making Broadway shows available to stream with proshot recordings, they’ll tell you it’ll destroy live theatre. New York is expensive, my internet plan and a 20-30 dollar ticket is not.

I think we're all missing the point which is that they COULD have run longer with "Oh Mary" style stunt casting, but they CHOSE not to. I think the reality is they can make more money with less loss on tour, and maybe through licensing later, and this was their choice. Maybe not everything needs to run on Broadway forever?

Without moving to live-streaming, live theater can’t keep going. They could charge 50 bucks for a single night, for thousands of viewers. People would pay it in bigger numbers than WWE. They could even run specials for stunt casts + sell pro shot and professionally edited recordings. The fanbase is here, it’s simply inaccessible

Theater rent is the largest cost for a Broadway show. As long as we have 3 companies that own the majority of theaters over charging for rent this will happen again and again.

The theatre owners are greedy: rent prices are insane and making it impossible to recoup. Which is also crazy since the theatre owners are also signing on as producers-how do they expect to make money in that sense? Producer title is just for show?

I want to add specificity that the 5 shows that have recouped since the pandemic is only referring to musicals. Many more straight plays have recouped, but musicals are becoming incredibly expensive to mount with high capitalizations like this one :-/
