Troy (2004) does not get nearly enough credit and Brad Pitt's preparation for Achilles is a big part of why the film works at all. Six months of training specifically modelled on Greek statuary. Wolfgang Petersen wanted Pitt's body to look like it had been carved rather than built, referencing actual ancient sculptures of Achilles when designing the physique. Pitt tore his Achilles tendon during production, which given who he was playing is either poetic or deeply unlucky depending on how you look at it. The film was made for $175 million and grossed $497 million, which at the time felt like a modest return for its scale. Twenty years later people talk about it completely differently. The performances hold up. Eric Bana's Hector is genuinely one of the more underrated turns of that decade. The duel between Achilles and Hector remains one of the best filmed sword fights of the era. And with The Odyssey opening this week, the Troy conversation is coming back around whether people expected it or not.
