Plato thought that reading books would make you stupid. And were he alive today, he would say the same thing about watching YouTube videos, or listening to podcasts, and learning why he thought this can help us consume media all the better. Plato had no problem with the content in books, or with learning more broadly, but the process of reading. And he had three issues. The first is that books are static. They don't adapt to the audience, or respond to who is in the room. They will always be the same, and it might not be appropriate or best for some people. Second, it's really hard to retain books because reading is passive. We read something, we enjoy it, and then we move on, but barely any of it sticks. Third, and most importantly, you cannot challenge books and engage with its content. Plato thought that we could only learn and reach truth through active, conversational dialectic. We must listen, but also react to others' positions. We need to engage critically. Modern technology hasn't made this better. Today we are bombarded by a constant torrent of information. It is relentless. We are drowning under content and hot takes, and we cannot form an opinion. We cannot discuss an opinion because, by the time we do so, the world has already moved on. The solution to this is to consume less, and to consume it better. Read fewer books, listen to fewer podcasts, watch fewer YouTube videos, and engage with the community and with each other. All the more. Learn an idea. Talk about an idea, and see how that idea can change your life.
