So, to clear this up. if you take the food home, it is taxed like groceries. if you eat in the restaurant/cafe, it's taxed like you buying a service.

It has nothing to do with cleaning plates, I don’t know where other commenters got that from 😅 Dine-in tax is 25 % and take away tax is 15 %. This is because Norwegian tax regulations differentiate between serving food and selling food. If sold to be eaten in the restaurant it is considered serving, if not it is considered selling.

Think they have to pay 25% mva (taxes) if ur seated. And only 15% to bring. I might be wrong but its something like that

Why do you have to tip 20% at a cafe in the US?
2026-05-19 19:57:22

Kitty Anderson :
That is the equivalent of a 9.44% table service charge. Isn't 15% a minimum tip in the US?

There is a 10% tax for sit down restaurants put on by the government. It’s nothing the restaurant can do. Even McDonald’s has this

atleast we include the tax in the prices so we dont have to think about it and tip is not required or expected.
that tax is required by law actually its kinda to prevent overcrowding in the restaurant and kinda to have a cheaper option for takeaway.

I guess we're about to see the same thing in Sweden as the VAT for groceries got lowered from 12% to 6% earlier this year and the VAT for the restaurants is still 12%

VAT - value added tax. If you just take away its half VAT, eat it there and is charged full VAT. Cafe gets nothing more, tax goes to gvmt

This is what happens when you don’t need to give a tip, they’ve gotta pay them as a business so they charge more for service
