What kind of information do I even look for? I had a cool idea for a historical gothic fantasy/horror novel (1920s rural Ireland. There’s fae. They’re scary.) but I got stuck during the research stage because I didn’t know what I was supposed to be looking for. I ended up just doing a lot of research on the Old IRA and the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War which was relevant because the main character’s father is military but I didn’t know where to go from there, so I put the project on the back burner. It was also a pretty ambitious project seeing as I hadn’t written anything in years (I also hadn’t been reading much, which definitely had an effect on my writing) so I’m working on short stories right now, but it is a project I’m interested in going back to at some point!
