For about a year I was dealing with this really foggy vision - imagine looking through a steamed up shower screen and then by the end of the shower you can barely see a thing, just outlines. That was my eye. And the surgery was so risky because of what was already happening at the back of my eye, so the surgeons really didn't want to touch it unless they absolutely had to. The moment I knew I needed it was in my English lit lesson reading Birdsong and I couldn't see black text on a white background anymore - just two or three words at a time in massive text on the screen. I was 16, sitting at the front of class, shy and mortified that everyone could see the saucy scenes I was reading in giant font.
