@thearticulateauti: Using idioms and hints to try to teach or explain expectations won’t work for a literal-thinking autistic brain. Provide accessibility by being more specific and direct #ActuallyAutistic #Manager #Corporate #Employment #Accessibility

As an autistic person, I can know what you're saying, and I can know what the thing you're saying means. That's not the same as knowing what YOU mean, and it's frustrating to explain

Okay but you can genuinely hear when someone smiles on the phone or not, no matter their tone. /i'm also autistic lol

the second one is true, but I'd assume I can say the same things while smiling lol

I *understand* the honey abd vinegar one but it doesn't make sense. Vinegar traps are so useful for fruit flies

Im so glad other autistic ppl are piping up with clarification on our end of things :) but always remember that if you've met 1 autistic person, you've met 1 autistic person! Social prowess and such varies greatly! Sometimes over explaining can feel quite condescending, so with some folks it might be better to ask 'do you want more clarification on that?' instead of going right into it!! hope everyone has a good day and a fruitful future

My problem is I wouldn't be able to make small talk while also trying to do what they need help with 😭😭

not to detour this for long. just wanted to add you actually can hear the difference in someone's voice when they are smiling, especially while singing. it's subtle, but distinct! 😀

I love idioms, I can talk for hours about their meanings and their origins…but I’m not going to catch what you’re trying to tell me unless you’re direct about what I’m doing wrong. I’m just going to start questioning everything I’m doing until I burn myself out.

I once had a coworker ask me to "try opening my mouth a little wider when I spoke over the phone as they might not be able to hear me properly" I eventually realised that my mouth was shaping into a smile when I talked and I threw a soft cube in their direction 😂 They knew how much I hate being told to smile

The smile on the phone is actually literal. For once it is actually quite literal in most cases unless you’re really good at acting out a smile in voice inflections. People can tell when I’m literally smiling vs when I’m not just based on the tone of my voice.

My brain thinks in the literal way but I understand the analogy usually. Unless I’m half asleep then I’m like… huh?

I got in “trouble” once in highschool and I was called to the vice principals office bc the teacher I was apparently rude to wanted an apology (I had no idea how I was rude to her btw) and she said “you catch more flies with honey” and I just looked her dead in the eyes and said “I don’t want flies”
