I would never let him get a 70k car. I would tell him to keep his 35k and I'll spend 35k for his car.

This should be one of those sit down conversations where you explain how proud of him you are, your very valid concerns, the foreseeable problems, and then request a compromise that solves both current concerns and his future needs.

I think you should give it to him but he should only spend half on the car and the rest for gas, insurance and upgrade later

I think even a 35k car for a 18 year old is nuts. I'd tell him we will put money in your savings for you and when you graduate college you'll have the money to do what you want with

I would keep the promise and if he ruins the car then it’s a life lesson. Him being taught about keeping one’s word is what is important.

Compromise with a 40k car max, both go in at 20k and he can use the leftover he earned for insurance, gas, college in general. Good work kid.

What if you keep the promise, but only let him buy a reasonable car for that age. Give him the rest when he’s older and has graduated. A 70k car for a teenager is not a good idea.

Unless he gets a boring Toyota or Honda, he will have major repair costs in the future. Not right away, but eventually it is a certainty. So as long as he is smart enough to set aside a chunk of that in an interest bearing account then he should be allowed as he sees fit. If it’s a mistake, then he will learn like the rest of us……..the hard way.

Make him pay the insurance and find out the rates. He has to pay that first, then decide on the car.

I think you have to match it. But can talk about other expenses like insurance and maintenance and help him find a cool but reasonable car. And help him to budget and save the rest of his money for other things.

Most trucks cost more that $70,000 now. They need to make him responsible for his own insurance.

I think you sit him down and have a serious conversation with him about it. Breaking a promise like this could be the kind of thing that makes him stop talking to his parents after he moves away. Calmly explain where you’re coming from and offer alternatives for the $35K match.
