You are using some kind of teleological argument with evolution and it is false. Evolution does not have a direction. Life evolves into all directions, only death cuts some directions, but life continues to challenge. It's true that animals fit into their environment, but as far as perception goes, the more precise perception of surroundings, the more successful is the individual. So yes, evolution does favor better, more precise alignment=truth to surroundings.

Studying cognitive behavioral psychology, social psychology, meta cognition, biology, and evolution through a lens of critical analysis helped me deconstruct a lot of biases and assumptions about reality toward the goal of determining truth through observation and understanding. Learning about the experiences and perspectives of people very different from myself opened my eyes to the fact that no one person can zoom out enough to truly achieving such a broad observation and understanding.

Human logical thinking is not only limited by intelligence, emotion, or information , it is also limited by time.

But we are still evolving. Couldn't we as a species begin to see benefits of at least attempting to value and orient to truth? Maybe the evolutionary benefits just aren't apparent...yet

I would say that our evolutionary needs have changed as we have become the Apex predator of the planet and it's actually a huge drawback that we're stuck with evolutionary traits that got us there. just because we evolved pattern finding which helped us survive doesn't at all mean that can't be used poorly in the way that's detrimental to us as a species. That may actually be the next stage of evolution. Fitness may actually be the ability for rational thought going forward. in general, the way evolution works is it's not a majority trait that leads the change. It's the mutation that is better suited to the current environment.

I’d say what u r describing is the highest form of critical thinking, not a limitation of critical thinking itself.

wouldn't being able to understand situations better help you better prepare for them to increase the likelihood of your survival? is that not a way in which critical thinking is a form of evolutionary fitness? I feel there is something I may be missing here but I don't know what it is, so if anyone could offer the perspective I am missing it would be very helpful.

As an atheist, the only truth I know is that we’ll never know all the answers, and that’s okay 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm an agnostic instrumentalist. By treating our theories and math not as perfect reflections of a hidden reality, but as predictive instruments, we bypass the limitations of our biology. If a model consistently predicts outcomes with extreme precision, it works - regardless of whether our brains can natively visualize the underlying mechanics.

What would be your answer to “ what grounding do we have for rationality if we’re just evolutionary creatures “ ? ( my guess would be we have none ?)

To survive you first of all have to make realistic assessments on your surroundings. This is not 100% „created for truth“ but it is at least interacting with it, I guess

Reality becomes completely contextual. God no god or I’m ok without knowing one way or another. Reason for life and meaning itself becomes what I direct it to become. That doesn’t happen through critical thinking skills or knowing god is real. For me it becomes living to show kindness and compassion without prejudice. It’s the continuance of love in every relationship and human interaction without attachment or bias. Be here now and always strive to be kind towards everyone. It’s not the easiest path but it’s exceptionally satisfying and meaningful. 🙏

We have evolved memetic methods for evaluating truth, along with the capacity for critical thinking which is by definition the challenging of our biases. I'd say that has been a very successful trait.

We didn’t evolve for seeing truth, but we still ask what is true, so maybe we’re evolving toward rationality.
