Do you think this also applies to people who have been interpreting w a diff language for years? I’ve been interpreting spanish for my parents my whole life and want to become an asl interpreter. I’m very familiar with the mental processing of interpreting in spanish. Do you think it would be easier for someone like me becoming an asl interpreter or no since it’s still a different language?

interpreting has been the hardest part of asl for me, my teacher is amazing and my class is very respectfully of being completely silent when signing or watching someone sign because we are still learning none manuals and until we have those and can incorporate them fully, we focus on signing clearly and not talking.

I think it is similar to interpreting languages in real time too but probably one with a completely different grammar structure since ASL & English for example have different word orders. I speak Japanese and English for example and the order is completely different that I can be drained in a few hours. I’m assuming ASL & English has a similar amount of fatigue but that is just my guess as an ASL learner.

I used to work at the Idaho State school as a dorm counselor. the kids would ask me to interpret the movie, I am not a trained interpreter, but I did my best. I was always worn out after concentrating that long! But the kids appreciated it. Fun experience!

I am but fluent in ASL but I can communicate with my Deaf daughter. I struggle to sign in ASL because when she first became deaf they had my signing in pigeon signed English. They hoped my daugher could learn to read lips so they wanted me to use ASL signs in English word order. I have struggled to learn true ASL ever since.

And we go back and forth between the two hemispheres of our brains constantly, cause language is on one side, and spatial is on the other side. We work our brains HARD.

And while we are searching for meaning to then put out into ASL, we are still listening to the rest of the incoming message and continuing to process that at the same time. Nothing can get dropped.

I’m a SODA and have been asked to be a terp all my life. People don’t understand that just because I sign my own thoughts fluently, I cannot do in my ears and out my hands - I just can’t flow like that. That mental workload is why 2 terps are best when booking.

as an Russian-English pair interpreter (though not ASL), I agree 100%! it's waaayy harder to convey the massage behind the words and make sure it's been understood. so hearing and seeing how the same process is expressed/explained in ASL is so enlightening and important to me! thank you!

this summarized a lot of how i feel. I'm a translator and interpreter in French, Spanish and English, but in my country there isn't much knowledge about it outside of work circles, so everyone assumes it's very easy or "just talking", but it's so mentally exhausting.

this is also part of why it's recommended to handle any assignment over 45min-an hour to have two interpreters switching back and forth in 10, 15, or 20 min increments (preferably) giving your team interpreter biofeedback and supporting where they may falter, looking up concepts to feed as needed etc. its a very highly taxing process but physically and mentally

I think this is similar to audio processing disorder, I’m getting the noises and body cues , no worries but now I gotta take that info and fill in gaps I missed, try to mesh some context in to check it makes sense then rely…all in the same amount of time you just said a sentence,
