@bookswithamanda212: Anti-intellectualism has been able to be weaponized as a tool by right wing politicians against their voting base because 1.) the average voter doesn’t have enough intellectual humility to accept that there are something things too complex, dense, or time consuming for them to understand, but additionally, and more importantly, because 2.) the institution of academia itself has not done a good job establishing a level of trust with the average person. Due to the history of higher education being reserved for the elite and exclusionary towards average people, there hasn’t been a major effort to rectify any mistrust that has been developed. There needs to be a way for the average person (average voter) to receive important information regarding things like public health from trusted scholars and experts in a way that is simplified and easy to understand. By consistently venturing into local communities to do so, this can be one of the ways in which the institution can fight back against anti-intellectualism. #antiintellectualism #progressive #academia #democrats #liberal

anti-intellectualism came from academia when they started using DEI (Daddy's evil idiot) for admissions

@mshadowx8 here’s the most recent one I posted about academia’s hand in the problem with anti-intellectualism. This one doesn’t touch on the accessibility issue, rather the mistrust and history of elitism.

Academia across the broad has been complicit in it. In the EU anyway, academic publishing sector is a racket. Insane costs to access publicly funded research. But there are increased pressure to do outreach and have real community impact.

I have no idea how to get the majority of humanity to accept that there are many concepts that most of us will simply never fully grasp. The very notion offends so many people no matter how true it is!

I worked for a think tank funded by wealthy philanthropist that studies efficacy of academia. Candidly, much of higher ed could be deleted without any negative effects on society. In many cases higher ed is doing more harm than good.

universities came up from the rise of the merchant class. old school universities used to have tall towers so they could see returning merchant ships coming sooner, and this is why most universities still have one very tall tower usually around the center of campus. not to spot ships, but because it's merchant tradition.

I wasn't aware of that😁 I knew the access to higher education was mostly due to a lack of economic position to pay for it😊
