The 1940 film
The 1940 film "Dance, Girl, Dance," featuring Lucille Ball, along with a cast of other greats of the time, was a complete flop. As many failed films of the past eras do, it was found to be a much more relevant & amusing film in later years. In the 1970s, it was seen as more of a feminist piece, showing empowered women working towards their goals. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2007, for being"culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It also made the list of 'Top 100 Essential Films' by the National Society of Film Critics 2002. I think it is a fun film from a bygone era, and I can see the feminist bit. I don't know that I'd consider it one of the top 100 essentials though. If you're a big fan of Lucy, it is definitely a must see. Lucy was afraid of how she would be perceived in the role. She told Motion Picture Magazine--"Do you know I never was so scared as when I went into that picture. Just thinking of my part as Bubbles, the Tiger Lily, made me tremble, It was my break of breaks, this picture, and I didn't want to make people dislike me. I didn't see how they could do anything else, because I had to be mean to Maureen O'Hara, who had the sweet girl role in the picture. I had to steal Louis Hayward from Maureen. I had to slap her face, pummel her on the stage of the burlesque theater - of course I got a make-up department black eye out of that myself - and be generally hateful. But the character was a real one. I had known girls like that. The part had meat on the bones; so I took it - and now I'm glad. It was the best role I've had."
