@urbex_niagara: Before this factory was built here the property originally housed a wooden grist mill which was built around 1886. A rubber company later moved in and began manufacturing rubber boots and shoes. But on January 2, 1899, a fire destroyed the mill. In 1900 after the fire a massive two-building red brick complex was built on opposite sides of each other connected by an elevated aerial bridgeway. The factory was later taken over by another rubber company in 1917 and the factory later closed permanently in 1929. The building remained vacant until 1955 when a fabrics company moved in and began making industrial and drapery fabrics. In 1983 the company started producing ballistic body armour for the military and law enforcement. In 1963, the company demolished the secondary warehouse / factory across the street and removed the connecting aerial bridge. The factory stayed opened until the company later relocated to Grimsby in 2016 and the property was later purchased in 2017 for $6 million by a developer to transform the factory into a luxury condominium. In the early 2020s the project faced repeated setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, rising construction costs, and new tariffs. In January 2026 the building was listed for sale under a power of sale process which occurs after a mortgage default. Hopefully in the future the project can be completed and the building be restored. As I would hate to see this beautiful building be demolished. #Urbex #Abandoned #Factory #1900 #Fyp
Have you been inside the old Lakeside/My Cottage? My husband worked in the offices upstairs before it closed. I was only in there once but I remember there being a beautiful wood staircase. I’ve lived in Port my entire life and always take these buildings for granted until I see something like this 🥰
